Who We Are

The NorthSouth Group was formed out of a concern for the persistence of poverty and vulnerability. Main areas of focus are adolescent health and development, youth employment, child protection, disability, gender equity and men’s participation, and water and sanitation. We come from international agencies, NGOs, academia and government. Our mission is to collaborate with local partners and communities to improve the health and well-being of those at risk.

Student Internship Program

In efforts to raise awareness and build knowledge about poverty issues, we have established a student internship program offering opportunities for in-depth work in areas of particular interest.Under some projects, students from high- and low-income countries will be paired, working together as full members of project teams.

2010 Intern: Diane Uwamugabe

Diane Uwamugabe is a member of our Kenya-team working to support orphans and vulnerable children. Her special focus will be on teen orphans and their prospects for livelihoods.

Diane Uwamugabe“I am a graduate from the University of Leeds where I completed both my bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Economics, and my master’s degree in International Law.  A native of Rwanda, I grew up in Rwanda, Uganda, Togo and Mali, following my father at his various posts as an international public health professional, and came over to the U.K. in 2004 to undertake my university studies. My African experience has exposed me to the common obstacles, such as corruption, non relevant projects, along with lack of consultation with the intended beneficiary populations, that developing countries often face in their quest to achieve sustainable development and eradicate absolute poverty.
My studies and extensive coursework gave me an informed view on these issues and further motivated me to want to make a significant contribution in the development field, more specifically, with regards to poverty reduction.

I believe working with the NorthSouth Group will give me the opportunity to meet and work with different people from various backgrounds, particularly, from poor economic backgrounds.  I believe this will give me hands on experience as well as a deeper understanding of challenges to development encountered on a daily basis, and thus,  help me in learning how to apply my skills to solving real problems.

I look forward to working for an NGO that is developing sustainable solutions to global challenges in human rights, development and poverty reduction. “
